HW 32
I would say the most nightmarish aspect of our culture's practices around illness and dying would be to be denied care when you're dying. Another would be to die hooked up to a machine in this isolated place alone. Alternative practices would be to have a home death and hospice care. Another alternative for the government is to have incentive for the people to stay healthy. If people have more of a motive to eat better and stay more healthy they might actually do it and feel like they're getting something out of it. Many deadly diseases are caused from people's lifestyles. Something I could do personally is change the way I live so I can lower the odds of getting any kinds of lifestyle caused diseases and I can share what I know with the people around me so they can change the way they live to help themselves. There is a direct correlation between the illness and dying unit to the food unit. The way we eat is very unhealthy and this can lead obesity and also lead to diseases such as heart disease and diabetes which are the cause for many deaths. If we can eat better and live better we can have less health problems.

Jasper,
ReplyDeleteYou've definitely got a strong insight into the nightmares of illness and dying; whether they are personal or general. You definitely answered all of the key questions surrounding the unit. But, with that said, there is something you could change about this post, which is wordiness. This might sound a little funny seeing as you have only a paragraph, but within your paragraph there are just too many words.
For starters, you begin your post with, "I would say the most nightmarish aspect of our culture's practices around illness and dying would be to be denied care when you're dying". While the point is made that this is what your paragraph is going to be about, it is a run on sentence and looks a little crammed together. Personally, I would change it to be more along the lines of, "Throughout this unit I discovered many nightmarish aspects surrounding illness and dying. In my opinion, the worst aspect in our culture is denying care to those who are dying". This makes your paragraph a little longer and also makes your sentence a little clearer. Overall, you have a good understanding and that's the most important part of this assignment; to prove you have a deeper understanding of the dominant social practices surrounding illness and dying.
I think you did a good job of getting various ideas out at one time. You talk about getting people to eat healthier but you also express some of your concerns for the way that the government in a sense has been failing its followers by not having universal care. These people can get denied coverage by the health insurance companies that can potentially lose money by having them under the health care plan because they are considered to much of a risk. You talk a lot about the dominant social practices and how you feel about them. Good insights the only improvement for this blog would be to tie this back to some of the text we have read via a mention or maybe a link.
ReplyDeleteJasper,
ReplyDeleteI liked that you out got all your ideas about illness and dying. I also liked how you connected this unit to the food unit, by saying that people should focus more on preventative medicine:
"The way we eat is very unhealthy and this can lead obesity and also lead to diseases such as heart disease and diabetes which are the cause for many deaths. If we can eat better and live better we can have less health problems."
I thought this was important too. I remember a while ago Obama said something about wanting to focus his health care plan more on preventative care (eating healthy, getting exercise), so maybe that is something that could happen one day.
